Pony
Kids Program - "Pony Kids" is the catch all phrase for our junior
program. We have a full program to bring kids from first time
riders to accomplished equestrians.
Horses teach children respect, responsibility, time management, accountability
and to be a gracious competitor and partner with their horse or
pony. Older kids share responsibility for helping younger
kids who in turn have jobs they do. At Tahoe Meadows we combine lessons with games and
lots of "horse" down time. Horses are a big financial
commitment for a family and we help children develop the skills they will use
all their lives to communicate with sponsors, employers and peers. At
Tahoe Meadows our philosophy is parents are a child's first sponsor and
horses are viewed as an "special" privilege that comes
with things a child does for the family in return.
Some of our regular Activities.
Camp - Most of our kids start with Pony Camp. Once
they have been through camp kids are invited to participate in our
schooling shows, horse camp outs and other activities. Camp covers
the basics of horse safety and riding.
Lessons and Training - Everyone is in a training and lesson
program. Our goal is to continually improve our
skills.
4th of July Parade, Truckee - We march in the 4th of July parade
every year and need LOTS of parental help and water bottles! We
take the good ponies and switch around riders. Decorating the
ponies (and ourselves) in red, white and blue is tradition.
Horse Camping - We try to go to Heskins Horse Park in Nevada City at
least once or twice a season. There are lawns, green grass fields, cross
country and water jumps that are sized just right for beginners and
ponies. We sleep over, the kids do all the stable care
and it is great fun.
Schooling Shows at Tahoe Meadows - Practice Shows are great
fun. We award ribbons and do the shows just like the real thing.
SNHSA shows - Sierra Nevada Horse Show Association is our local
Hunter Jumper Show Circuit. There are 7-9 shows a season in Reno and
surrounding areas including one at Tahoe Meadows. Our Pony Kids
show at these and several of our top riders compete for the overall year
end high point awards. This is great competition, affordable and
fun.
"A" Shows -
Certain of our riders head out to the big week long
Hunter Jumper shows on a regular schedule to compete for regional and
national Medals or Medal qualifiers. These shows are expensive and
while many riders do the circuit, it is fine if
riders pick and choose what they will attend based on goals and budget.
Jump
Cross - We do this for fun as part of our lessons or at special
potluck events. We jump around an outside Derby Course and try to
achieve the optimum time...not too fast or too slow. If you knock
a pole down you need to add a jump so it makes you think!
Eventing - We have a group of riders who participate in 8 to
10 3 Day
Eventing Competitions a year (Dressage, Cross Country and Stadium
Jumping) all over California, Idaho, Wyoming and Oregon.
